Works in Progress

Lots of irons currently in the fire. All are in early stages and a bit slow rolling, and I’m not ready to give them any release dates (or even commit to them being released at all, for that matter). But let’s chat about ‘em.

I always like writing random dungeon generators, and I have a very flexible algorithm tailored to dynamic, short-length missions and shifting encounters ala Left 4 Dead. There’s a sci-fi game about diving into minds in the works here, and the gameplay is feeling snappy.

We ended up with a pretty fun Global Game Jam entry and we’re talking about extending it into a full release. Right now it’s a multiplayer only, single-screen brawler, but we have ambitions toward a single player mode and lots of additions. No idea where we’ll find the art for that, but that’s a problem for another day.

My second board game is the furthest along and has a title - Hey Cutie! It’s a game about going on dates and vying for the affections of your crushes. Competitive, cutthroat, and humor-based.

This one’s ambitious - it’s a game about the game design process. As the player plays, the designer is constantly shifting and changing and tweaking the world around them. Focused on story-telling, puzzles, and having tonnnsss of secrets.

We’re churning along on stuff. Some of them are feeling fun, some still need lots of love, and all still have a ton of work ahead of them. Hoping to get at least one out the door before 2019 ends, but which one? Who can say…

Can you hit the style of the above character? I’m looking for a 2nd artist to work on an in-development card game titled Hey Cutie. The game’s a dating sim-turned card game - build up your looks, charm, brains, and edge and use that to woo crushes. If you’re adept at drawing women and enby folk, even better.

Paid project (though admittedly pay isn’t huge, I’m a smaller dev). Probably around 30+ different pieces, not all characters. I’ve released a board game before and have 10 years of professional video game dev experience, so it’s not my first rodeo.

My company site, http://www.onemethodmonkey.com, has gone live and is the official home for all information about my video games and board games. I’ve been using Tumblr as a stand-in for having a real website, but I had to get away from that for various reasons. Will still be using this space for general dev logging, blogging, and random foaming at the mouth, but that site is there for more professional purposes. Go check it out, I guess? Or whatever, I’m not your dad.

I’ve been spending a couple months creating a “game about game design” - a game where there’s a persistent narrator / designer talking through their decisions and dynamically manipulating the world. Not ready to announce it as an official next release, but it’s making steady progress.

One thing I made to help in this effort was a simple scripting language for authoring events and cinematics. I like Unity’s timeline, but it’s a bit heavyweight for the simple stuff.

I like how the language turned out - it’s intentionally pared down but still supports simple variables, conditionals, and different control flows for making more complicated animations.
